London Gets the World’s First Paella Fail Championship

At a glance

London will host the world's first Paella Fail Championship on 20 September 2026 in Walthamstow, organised by Paella Shack and London Paella School. Ten teams will compete to create the best and most entertaining paella, with awards for both successful and failed attempts. The event celebrates World Paella Day and aims to highlight the cultural and social aspects of paella.

Walthamstow to host a very different kind of paella competition this World Paella Day

This World Paella Day, London will host the World’s First Paella Fail Championship, a celebration of paella, Valencian Spanish culture, competition and the glorious moments when things don’t quite go according to plan.

Taking place on Sunday 20 September 2026 at Walthamstow Sunday Social Market, the event is organised by Paella Shack and London Paella School, founded by chef and paella specialist Xavi Meroño and supported by Social Street Markets Ltd.

Ten teams of two will have 90 minutes to cook their own paella, following the essential principles of Valencian paella while adding their own creative twists. The catch? The paella still has to be good. It still has to be edible.

The championship turns the idea of a cooking “fail” on its head. A questionable ingredient, a creative decision that goes wrong, or a paella that looks very different from what was planned could all become part of the competition.

FOUR TROPHIES. ONE UNFORGETTABLE DAY.

Paella Champion - the best paella, judged on flavour, rice, socarrat, aroma and execution. Paella Fail Champion - the most spectacular, entertaining and unforgettable fail. People’s Paella - the public’s favourite. The Golden Fail - one unforgettable fail and one unforgettable champion.

Before competing, all teams will take part in a traditional Paella Valenciana masterclass led by Xavi Meroño.

“Paella is much more than food. It’s tradition, culture, family and friends around a table. Sometimes it’s also a complete bloody disaster - and that’s OK. The important thing is that everyone has fun, the paella is edible, and we celebrate what makes paella such a social dish.”

The event celebrates World Paella Day on 20 September and brings the spirit of Valencian paella culture to Walthamstow.

THE WORLD’S FIRST PAELLA FAIL CHAMPIONSHIP

10 teams · 20 cooks · 10 paellas · 90 minutes · 4 trophies · 1 unforgettable champion

“Make a paella. Try not to fuck it up.”

Editorial insight

While London is no stranger to hosting culinary competitions, the upcoming event in Walthamstow offers a playful twist on the format, focusing on the creative missteps and occasional disasters that are often part of cooking. By embracing the idea of a “fail” as something to be celebrated rather than avoided, the organisers tap into the growing appetite for food events that prioritise enjoyment and community over technical perfection.

The timing of the event, coinciding with World Paella Day, highlights an ongoing interest in global food traditions and their reinterpretation in local settings. For participants and visitors alike, the championship offers a chance to engage with Valencian culture in a light-hearted way, while also supporting the area’s active street market scene. The inclusive nature of the competition, with trophies for both the best and most memorable failures, is likely to appeal to a broad audience looking for experiences that combine learning, entertainment, and a sense of humour.
