Papaya Studio marks 10 years with Cornwall growth, sustainable web design and the rise of AI
Newquay-based studio celebrates a decade in business, expanding its client base while championing low-carbon websites and embracing AI innovation.

Papaya Studio, a web design and digital product studio now based in Newquay, is celebrating 10 years in business after relocating to Cornwall to be part of its thriving creative community. Since moving two years ago, founder Nathan Hambling has built strong local roots, working with charities, universities, and purpose-driven companies across the county - while also expanding nationally with projects that reflect Papaya’s twin focus on sustainability and the opportunities (and challenges) of AI.

From solo founder to specialist studio

Originally launched by founder Nathan, Papaya Studio has grown from a solo practice into a modern, flexible studio that embraces remote collaboration, with a reputation for quality and care. Today the team includes Nathan and part-time designer Jack, supported by a network of project specialists.

“We’ve built our reputation by taking the time to truly understand the purpose and challenges behind each client’s business,” says Nathan. “That personal, caring approach means we often meet clients face-to-face to run discovery workshops and interviews - while delivering projects with the polish and processes you’d normally expect from a large agency.”

Over the years, Papaya has expanded beyond web builds into ongoing optimisation, support retainers, and digital product design for SaaS companies - a fast-growing area of demand with the rise of AI-powered businesses. This shift has also fuelled strong growth in recurring revenue, which has more than doubled over the past year.

“Our sweet spot is providing an agency-quality service with the personal touch of a freelancer,” explains Nathan. “We don’t cut corners or churn out templates. We obsess over client challenges, run discovery workshops, and deliver solutions that actually work.”

A sustainability-first approach

Sustainability runs deep at Papaya Studio, from low-carbon web design to ethical client partnerships. The team has become known for its expertise in designing fast, efficient, low-energy websites that reduce carbon impact without compromising performance.

Research shows the internet is responsible for around 3.8% of global carbon emissions - putting it on par with the aviation industry. Papaya tackles this problem by analysing the carbon footprint of websites and making practical design and development choices that keep energy use to a minimum. From reducing image sizes and unnecessary code to streamlining user journeys, every design decision is weighed against both user value and environmental impact.

Hosting choices are also part of the equation. Papaya uses servers powered by 100% renewable energy, independently rated as around 10% more efficient than standard setups. This means client websites are not only faster and more reliable, but also significantly greener.

“When we discovered the scale of the internet’s carbon footprint, we became obsessed with finding solutions,” says Nathan. “Even the smallest design decision can affect carbon output. For us, sustainability isn’t just a nice thing to have - it’s a way to create high-performance websites that are genuinely better for both users and the planet.”

Recent wins and growing reputation

In the last year alone, Papaya Studio has added major Cornish clients including Cornwall Community Foundation and Falmouth University’s BeGood agency, alongside national projects in Bristol, Sheffield, London, and York. The studio recently secured a contract with a leading Cornwall based communication tech firm, thanks to its sustainability credentials, and completed a rebrand and website project for BeGood.

The studio also partnered with the Outset VCSE programme, supporting seven small charities and community organisations in Cornwall with affordable websites.

“It’s been amazing to collaborate with organisations like Cornwall Community Foundation and Falmouth University’s Be Good agency,” says Nathan. “These kinds of projects are opportunities to support meaningful development within Cornwall, while showing that Cornwall’s creative sector can deliver design work on par with any major city.”

Cornwall at the heart of the business

Although Papaya Studio works with clients nationwide, Cornwall has quickly become the hub of its activity. Since relocating to Newquay just two years ago, the team has already delivered around 10 local projects - spanning charities, education providers, and purpose-led businesses that reflect Cornwall’s values-driven economy.

“For me, Cornwall isn’t just where I live - it’s where I want my business to contribute,” says Nathan. “I think there’s a huge opportunity to keep creative work and investment in the county, rather than seeing it outsourced to London. The community here is incredibly supportive, and being based in a co-working space like C-Space means we’re surrounded by founders and creatives who look out for each other.” He adds: “Everyone here works hard to make the dream of living and working by the sea a reality - but at the same time, people make space to enjoy life outside of work. That’s really special.”

Navigating the rise of AI in web design

The rapid growth of AI tools has transformed the design and development landscape, with everything from website generators to creative platforms now incorporating AI features. But Nathan believes these tools still fall short of solving the deeper challenges that organisations face.

“AI can spin up a site that looks decent on the surface, but most businesses need far more than that,” says Nathan. “Our clients are looking for websites that speak to staff, customers, and donors - and bring all those needs together into a clear digital strategy. That’s not something AI can deliver on its own. Yet…”

Instead, Papaya sees AI as a powerful support tool rather than a replacement. The team experiments with AI-driven workflows and automation platforms like Zapier and N8N to improve efficiency, while staying closely connected to new developments through Slack communities and peer groups.

“We’re continually exploring AI tools to see how they can add value,” Nathan explains. “But the human touch - understanding people, strategy, accessibility and performance - remains the difference between a website that just looks nice, and one that actually works for an organisation and its stakeholders.”

Looking ahead

As Papaya Studio enters its second decade, Nathan is keen to grow the core team further, with plans to bring on a full-time designer and developer to continue expanding retainer-based models to support local organisations.

“We believe a flexible approach to working is the most sustainable way forward - it allows us to collaborate effectively while keeping creative work and investment here in Cornwall,” says Nathan. “Our goal is to keep growing carefully, while staying true to what’s worked: personal service, purposeful partnerships, and sustainable design.”

As Papaya Studio looks ahead to the next chapter, its focus remains clear: building meaningful partnerships, supporting Cornwall’s growing creative economy, and proving that a small, values-driven studio can compete with larger agencies. Sustainability will continue to be at the heart of its work - from low-carbon websites to purpose-led projects - ensuring growth is achieved in a way that benefits both clients and the wider community.
