Surrey Signature Spaces joins BBC’s DIY SOS team to transform family home for Rafi’s Road to Recovery

Surrey Signature Spaces, the bespoke joinery specialists based in Chertsey, are proud to have played a part in the BBC One programme DIY SOS: Rafi’s Road to Recovery, which aired on 17 October 2025.

The emotional episode saw the DIY SOS team, tradespeople, and volunteers from across the country come together to help eight-year-old Rafi and his family. After a life-changing illness left Rafi severely disabled, their home was no longer suitable for his needs. The ambitious build adapted the property to create a safe, accessible, and comforting space that the family could finally call home again.

The Surrey Signature Spaces team, led by Joe Needham, created bespoke furniture and storage solutions tailored to the family’s new layout, including custom cabinetry and fitted joinery to enhance accessibility and comfort.

“When we heard about Rafi’s story, we knew we had to get involved,” said Joe Needham, Director of Surrey Signature Spaces. “Our work is usually about creating beautiful, functional spaces for clients, but this was about something much deeper. Being part of the DIY SOS team was an absolute privilege. When the final reveal came, there really wasn’t a dry eye in the place. Seeing the family’s reaction is something we’ll never forget.”

Surrey Signature Spaces specialises in luxury, made-to-measure joinery; from bespoke media walls and fitted wardrobes to full interior transformations. While the company’s projects are often high-end residential commissions, this collaboration with DIY SOS highlights the heart and humanity that drives their craft.

“We wanted to use our skills to help make daily life easier and more uplifting for Rafi and his family,” Joe added. “The whole experience reminded us why we do what we do, design can truly change how people live.”

The DIY SOS episode Rafi’s Road to Recovery brought together dozens of trades and volunteers to deliver the life-changing home in just nine days. The transformation was emotional for everyone involved, and a reminder of the power of community and compassion.
